I’ve driven the 6-hour trip to my mom’s house so many times that I have packing down to a science. Everything has a place, everything has a purpose, and everything is designed to prevent meltdowns (mine and theirs).
Here’s my exact packing list — the stuff I bring every single time.
The Non-Negotiables
- Backseat organizer — this goes on the back of the front seat. Snacks, wipes, small toys — all within kid reach so they don’t scream for me to pass things.
- Travel tray — flat surface for activities. Makes the car seat into a mini desk.
- Snack box per kid — individual containers with a variety of snacks. They feel like they’re choosing, which buys time.
- Change of clothes — in a ziplock bag that’s easy to grab. You WILL need this.
- Activity bag — 4-5 screen-free activities per kid, individually wrapped.
The “I Learned This the Hard Way” List
- Extra plastic bags — for trash, dirty clothes, car sickness emergencies
- A blanket per kid — they always fall asleep and get cold
- Phone charger (long cord) — because your phone will die if you’re playing DJ
- Paper towels, not just wipes — wipes don’t handle juice spills on fabric seats
My Timing Strategy
I plan road trips around sleep schedules. Leave at nap time = 2 free hours. Leave at bedtime = most of the drive done while they sleep. This matters more than any product I could recommend.
